Rose and Peter Valoshin go outside to play

The neighborhood kids gather on the street corner of Maple and Cold stone ave. debating who will start as the hunter in their game of Manhunt.

Peter becomes impatient and declares himself the hunter, for he is the oldest at age 12 and the tallest.

Tommy Hendricks who lives on the opposite side of the street from Rose and Peter complains. He thinks Peter is too fast to be the first hunter, he would surely catch them all.

Nelly Melville who’s a head shorter than Peter and only a year younger, claims Peter should be the Hunter. Mostly because she has had a crush on him.

After much arguing and commotion, Peter simply begins to count to twenty. The kids scatter up and down Maple ave in search of a hiding spot.

Rose decides to hide in her mother's cherry tree. It is her normal hiding spot but she is certain Peter will not come to find her because he is her older brother and he will let her hide the longest. To let the other kids think she has won.

Rose hears the hoots and hollers of the other kids when Peter discovers Tommy hiding under the front stoops of his own house. Tommy comes barreling down the street at full speed, Peter not far behind.

The truck driver for the mattress company turns down the street at the corner of Maple and Cold stone ave. looking down at his clipboard to check the address for delivery.

Tommy doesn’t look up when crossing the street, he normally stares at his feet when running. Peter stares at the back of Tommy’s head. Determined to catch him first.

Rose, peeking through the branches of the tree watches the truck turn onto the street. She likes the picture of the quilted mattresses on the side. Rose likes lace patterns. Looking in front of the truck she sees Tommy. Rose freezes. Peter was not far behind.

Tommy stands and brushes off his scraped-up knee caps. They are bleeding a little. He turns to see Peter, a few feet in front of the truck, laying motionless. He was bleeding a little too.
